What documents do I need for my ICBC learner's license?

You'll need two pieces of identification:

• Primary ID: Canadian passport, Canadian birth certificate, or Canadian citizenship card
• Secondary ID: BC Services Card, BC Driver's License, or Canadian photo ID card

You'll also need to pass a vision test and knowledge test at any ICBC driver licensing office.

What is the Graduated Licensing Program (GLP) in BC?

The GLP has two stages:

Stage 1: Learner's License (L)
• Must be 16 or older
• Requires a supervising driver 25+ with a valid license
• Zero blood alcohol content
• No electronic devices
• Valid for 2 years

Stage 2: Novice License (N)
• Must hold L for 12 months
• Pass Class 7 road test
• One passenger only (immediate family exempt)
• Zero blood alcohol content
• No electronic devices

How long do I have to wait before taking my road test?

For a Class 7 (N) road test:
• Minimum 12 months with your L license
• Completion of GLPT course reduces wait time to 9 months

For a Class 5 road test:
• Minimum 24 months with your N license
• Completion of GLPT course reduces wait time to 18 months
• Must have a clean driving record for the last 12 months

What is the GLPT course and is it mandatory?

The GLPT (Graduated Licensing Program Training) course is:
• A 12-hour professional driving course
• Not mandatory but highly recommended
• Reduces waiting periods for road tests
• Teaches essential defensive driving skills
• May qualify you for insurance discounts

How many driving lessons do I need before my road test?
